Q: How many passport Photos should I submit with my passport application?

  • Four identical photos must be submitted per passport application.

Q: What should be the size of my photo?

  • Exactly 3 x 4 cm

Q: How recent should my photos be?

  • Your photos must have been taken within 6 months of submitting your application.

Q: When should I apply for a new Passport?

  • If you have an expired BLUE or BURGUNDY Ethiopian Passport.

Q: Why should my application get delayed?

  • If the required document you provided is not completed or needs correction. For example, misspelled names, date of birth, name change, exact fee etc.
  • If further verification is needed

Q: Do you accept payment in cash or personal checks?

  • No, we do not accept cash or personal check. All payments must be in money order or cashiers check or certified bank check made payable to Consulate General of Ethiopia.

Q:What is the safest way to mail document?

  • FedEx, UPS, Express or Certified mail are the safest ways to send documents.

Q: I have emergency case to go to Ethiopia, but my Passport is Expired, What should I do?

  • If you have emergency case you can apply Laissez-Passer which is valid only to enter to Ethiopia. Before you come back you supposed to go Ethiopian Immigration Office to have a passport.

Q: My passport has already been issued and mailed to me, but I have not received it. What do I do?

  • Contact the Consulate General Office  so that the consulate officer will confirm the date your passport mailed to you the address to which it was mailed. If you cannot get it, you will be required to reapply and submit the full passport fee.

Q: How long does it take to get a Passport?

  • The Consulate General Office advise all applicants to submit their application at least two months ahead of their planned travel date.

Q: How long is a passport valid and when should I renew my Passport?

  • Your passport is valid for 5 years. If possible, you should renew your passport approximately six (6) months before it expired. Some countries require that your passport be valid at least six (6) months beyond the date of your trip. Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement is not met.

Q: I’m renewing my passport. Do I get the old one back?

  • Yes, your old passport will be returned to you along with your new passport.

Q: I found someone’s lost passport. what should I do with it?

Q: My passport has been damaged. Can I continue to use this passport?

  • If your passport has been significantly damaged, especially the book cover or the page displaying your personal data and photo, you will need to apply for new passport.
