AUTHENTICATION AND LEGALIZATION

Requirements for Power of Attorney (Wekilina) and Other Document Authentication

  • If you want to authenticate, granting power of attorney or revoking power of attorney, contractual agreement, will, minuet of a meeting, Memorandum of Association, Article of Association, declaration or any other document that need to be authenticated you need to bring with you a valid Ethiopian Passport or a valid Foreign National of Ethiopian Origin ID(Yellow Card), or valid American Passport or a valid Passport of any other country and US Permanent Resident  ID (Green Card) plus original documents you want to authenticate in 3 copies.
  • You need to appear in person in front of the authenticating Consul  and sign the documents that need to be signed.
  • You need to bring 3 (three) copies  the documents such as Power of Attorney or revoking power of attorney, contractual agreement, will, minuet of a meeting, Memorandum of Association, Article of Association, declaration or any other document that need to be authenticated because the Consulate General Office keeps one for its record, and return the two for you after authenticating it.
  • If you can not appear in person in front of the Counsel for the authentication of power of attorney, revoking power of attorney, contractual agreement, will, minuet of a meeting, Memorandum of Association, Article of Association, declaration or any other document that need to be signed and authenticated, first you need to sign before or in front of Notary Public ,  then you need to authenticate the document by the Office of the Secretary of  State of your resident state and then you need to authenticate that same document by the Department of States of USA in Washington DC. And finally, you can bring in person or send via mail to the Consulate General for final authentication. 
  • If you need to authenticate any document that originates or given by any Government Organ of United States of America, such as Academic Certificate or Diploma or Professional certificate or any Vital Events Documents (Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Divorce Certificate, Death Certificate, or a document that verify your unmarried status ) or Trade Mark, Property Rights, Court Decisions, Driving License or any other document, first you need to  authenticate, the document by the Office of the Secretary of State of your resident state and then you need to further authenticate that same document by the Department of States of USA in Washington DC. And finally, you can bring  in person or send via mail  to the Consulate General for final authentication. 
  • All applications must be sent via mail with an envelop which has a TRACKING NUMBER. The applications must also have a self-addressed, prepaid UPS, or USPS EXPRESS MAIL return envelop which has a tracking Number. You don’t have to call the Consulate General Office to check whether your application has been received or returned back to you since you have the option to track it online at the respective mailing company’s website.

  • A document of  Power of Attorney or revoking power of attorney, contractual agreement, will, minuet of a meeting, Memorandum of Association, Article of Association, declaration or any other document that intended to be authenticated by signing in front of the Consul, is recommended be typed in computer,  with font size of 12 and 1.5 space.

Criteria to be fulfilled by Applicant

  1. Any notarized document of power of attorney or revoking power of attorney, contractual agreement, will, minute of a meeting, Memorandum of Association, Article of Association, declaration or any other document  need to authenticated,  by the Office of the Secretary of  State of  resident state of the applicant or customer and then it needs to authenticated by  the Department of States of USA in Washington DC. And finally, it can be brought in person or sent via mail to the Consulate General for final authentication. 
  2. An applicant or a customer can bring a document, such as  power of attorney or revoking power of attorney, contractual agreement, will, minute of a meeting, Memorandum of Association, Article of Association, declaration or any other document with out notarizing, appear in person to the Consulate General Office  and  affix  his/her signature on the document in front of the authenticating Consul.
  3. In the second case, the applicant must bring with him/her self a valid Ethiopian Passport or a valid Foreign National of Ethiopian Origin ID(Yellow Card), or valid American Passport or a valid Passport of any other country and US Permanent Resident  ID (Green Card) and copy of each including 3 (three) copies of the documents to be authenticated.
  4. For applicant holding Ethiopian Passport in addition to the above requirements, a copy of a Green Card or I-94 must be presented ;
  5. For applicants holding Ethiopian Passport or origin National of Ethiopian Origin ID(Yellow Card):-  the service fee for power of attorney or revoking power of attorney, contractual agreement, will, minute of a meeting, Memorandum of Association, Article of Association, declaration or any other similar document shall be  $62.00 per document;
  6.  For applicants holding Ethiopian Passport or origin National of Ethiopian Origin ID(Yellow Card):-  the service fee for  Academic Certificate or Diploma or Professional certificate or any Vital Events Documents (Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Divorce Certificate, Death Certificate, or a document that verify your unmarried status ) or Trade Mark, Property Rights, Court Decisions, Driving License or any other document shall be $59.00  per document;
  7. For applicants holding American Passport or a Passport of any other country  the service fee for power of attorney or revoking power of attorney, contractual agreement, will, minute of a meeting, Memorandum of Association, Article of Association, declaration or any other similar document shall be  $95.00 per document;
  8. For applicants holding American Passport or a Passport of any other country  the service fee Academic Certificate or Diploma or Professional certificate or any Vital Events Documents (Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Divorce Certificate, Death Certificate, or a document that verify your unmarried status ) or Trade Mark, Property Rights, Court Decisions, Driving License or any other document shall be $90.00  per document;
  9. All payments shall be payable to the Consulate General of Ethiopia in Los Angeles, California in money order or cashier check;
  10. A completed application form (Click here to download) the Application Form.

  1.  Service fee is $62.00 per document for each authentication payable to the Consulate General of Ethiopia in Los Angeles, California in money order;

Criteria for Authenticating Documents Originating in Ethiopia

  1. Prior to applying at the Consulate General of Ethiopia for authentication of documents originating in Ethiopia, the documents must be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.
  2. For holders of valid Ethiopian Passport or Foreign National of Ethiopian Origin ID(Yellow Card) are required to pay a Service fee of $59.00 per document in money order ( for Education Certification, marital status Certification, Driving License and the like).
  3. For holders of valid Ethiopian Passport or Foreign National of Ethiopian Origin ID(Yellow Card) are required to pay a Service fee of $62.00 per document in money order ( for  documents related with court decisions or  properties related documents such power of attorney and the like)
  4. For holders of valid  American Passport or a Passport of any other country are required to pay a Service fee of $90.00 per document in money order ( for Education Certification, marital status Certification, Driving License and the like).
  5. For holders of valid  American Passport or a Passport of any other country are required to pay a Service fee of $95.00 per document in money order ( for  documents related with court decisions or  properties related documents such power of attorney and the like)
